Introduction to Pollution - Get them thinking!
This video can be used to spark the students interest and encourage them to generate their own thoughts about pollution. Using a video also provides an engaging approach to introducing a new topic or unit.
Where does this fit into the curriculum?
Title: Pollution
Context: Grade 10 Science Ecology Unit
Target audience: Grade 10 students
Audience knowledge: basic ideas of pollution
Content summary:
Skype episode – have the students extend their knowledge beyond the classroom by talking to an expert or another classroom.
Video collage created by IMovie with music – this is an opportunity to emulate the project for the students – assign them the task of coming up with their own collage – it doesn’t have to be from the net but challenge them to use smartphones, digital cameras to seek out examples of pollution or conservation, recycling
Smartboard technology – to get the students up and interactive with the lesson as opposed to sitting and just listening
Video game technology – it is a game set to engage the students individually or in small groups – this can be followed up with a reflection on some of the problems encountered in the game and solutions that were discovered – would they work in real world situations?
Web site – it is a resource for students(and teacher candidates) to follow up on the material and find links

A brief overview of our pollution lesson incorporating technology!
Outline of presentation:
Start with video at front of classroom.
Follow this up with a general question on what they thought they were watching…ask them who is the author of the music. Hint that this is significant but not yet.
Explain that we are fortunate today to have an expert to speak on the subject of pollution
This will lead to skype off the Smartboard…remember to turn on video.
After the skype call I will close the skype and ask the students for examples of pollution…I will pull up a simple chart to write their answers down…or get them to do it…I’ll play this by ear
I would help organize their answers into types of pollution by pulling each into their respective column…eg car pollution would be under air pollution, smoke under air pollution, AC/DC under noise pollution, etc.
I would pull up Citizen Science web site and explain that we will be spending some time next class in the lab playing the game with some discovery exercises to follow
At this point I would pull up the assignment sheet regarding pollution to assign to them

Potential Assignment
Assignment: Pollution
Take your smartphone, digital camera and take photos of examples of pollution in your local community. See if you can find different examples of the different types of pollution. Now see if you can also find examples of recycling or conservation. Take your collage of photos and assemble them any way you wish (powerpoint, video, or any appropriate medium) and present your view of our community and pollution.
In your presentation try to represent the answers to the following questions:
How rampant is pollution in our community?
Are we reducing our waste?
Are we finding ways to recycle, reuse, reduce?
